The Uralaungal Coolie VelakkarudeParasparaSahayaSangham, formed during 1925, was renamed as The Uralungal Labour Contract Co-operative Society and registered under Cooperative Societies Act in 1967, with its headquarters in Madapally in Vatakara Taluk of Kozhikode District. The Society undertakes civil construction work in Infrastructure development in North Kerala Region and is one of the most preferred organisations for development of roads, bridges and allied infrastructure.
Most of the Local Self Government Department (Panchayath Raj Institutions) have identified ULCCS Ltd as the reliable partner for entrusting the development of roads and other facilities at the village level. On the other end of the spectrum, ULCCS Ltd is active in National High way construction work under MORTH also. With these varied activities, the Society had increased its gross revenues in multiple folds consistently registering annual growth rate of over 35%. The Society had completed more than 3000 major projects in Kerala and about 200 projects worth more than Rs. 4000 lakhs are in various stages of completion.
The primary objective of the society is to generate employment by executing construction works strictly adhering to time and quality standards. Now, as already stated, more than five thousand workers directly or indirectly depend on the society for their livelihood. More than four lakhs man-days are generated under the society every year.
Labour Contract Co-operative Societies (L.C.C.S) plays a key role in the nation building exercise. From the conventional role of an employee, earning just the wages from doing a civil work, the members of L.C.C.C’S play a more active role by taking the contract of the entire work and share the profits earned from executing the work effectively. As the work is directly contracted to people who are responsible to execute the work, the labourers, the benefits accrue from this collective labour will be divided only to the worker members of the Society. Another important virtue of a labour co-operative lies in its freedom, which the workers enjoy in arranging the details for the execution of the work without employer’s supervision, except an inspection by him at completion of each successive task, to ensure that the work is being carried out to specification. ULCCS Ltd. is a successful model of an LCC in the country.
During the eight decades of its existence ULCCS Ltd. had developed strong systems within the organisation to complete the projects in time, cost withoutcompromising quality of work. ULCCS Ltd. is an ISO 9001:2008 organisation and has sophisticated construction equipment to complete the projects effectively. Even though the workmen of the Society hail from rural areas, they use modern state-of the art technology in their activities. In a sense, ULCCS Ltd. is a successful example how technology adoption in grass root levels can make phenomenal changes in the lives in rural India.
